This nineteenth-century mansion, formerly an orphanage for boys, has been beautifully restored into an exquisite boutique hotel. Situated on a steep, leafy street just outside Galle town in one of the citys most desirable residential areas, the Dutch House is an elegant and tranquil retreat. The Sun House is located right opposite.
Accommodation The four airconditoined suites combine grandeur with indulgent luxury. Each of the suites has a bedroom furnished with a king-sized antique four-poster bed with canopied mosquito netting, a cozy lounging area with a sofa, writing desk and library, and ensuite bathroom with a showers and Victorian bathtub. Silk drapes cascade from the ceiling, luxurious cushions and pillows, interesting design accents and paintings all add to the richness of each suite. The suites open out to views over the magnificent Galle Fort, the croquet lawn or a private garden. The room designs evoke a mood of stillness and warmth, which is utterly romantic and relaxing.
- The Blue Room : Located through the main living room, the Blue Suite opens out to the croquet lawn and the swimming pool beyond. This elegant and charming suite is dressed in blue silk and consists of a bedroom with king sized four-poster bed, lounging area and an ensuite bathroom with bath and shower.
- The Yellow Room: Opening onto the central living area and front verandah, this suite is highlighted with warm yellow silk drapes, cushions and covers. The inviting king-sized four poster bed is canopied with mosquito netting and the lounge area is ideal for relaxing. The stylish ensuite bathroom has a bath and shower.
- The V.O.C: Named after the Dutch East India Company, this exquisite suite opens onto the central courtyard and the large verandah that skirts around, with views across the croquet lawn. Warm and luxurious, this suite has an ensuite bathroom with his and her sinks, bath and shower.
- The Ball Room: The grand Ball Room is fit for royalty. Opening out to the manicured lawn and swimming pool on one side and the verandah and central courtyard on the other, this suite is spacious and airy. Draped in silk and infused with colours of olive green, brick red, and burnt yellow, this exquisite suite is an experience in itself. A large king sized four-poster bed, antique chests and cabinets, paintings and tapestries, and a dramatic candelabra adorn this room adding charm and character. The Ball Room recently hosted the world renowned singer Sting.
Facilities The Dutch House has a spacious living room opening out to the verandah and central courtyard. Breakfast, light lunch and snacks are served at the Dutch house in the garden, by the pool or in your room. Dinner is served daily at to the Sun House next door which is a sister property, and renowned for their delicious eastern and western cuisine. The Dutch House has a garden complete with croquet lawn, and a secluded infinity pool, which looks down over the hillside. The discreet and friendly staff at the Dutch House ensures your privacy, yet provide a very relaxed and homely atmosphere.
Excursions Galle’s 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just a few kilometers away. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the growing collection of art galleries, antique shops and several boutique hotels with cafes and restaurants serving eastern an western cuisine. There are some fine beaches just outside of the Fort including Wijeya, Unawatuna, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa. |
