Amapola, a secluded private beach house, perched on a hill over looking the beautiful Weligama Bay. Here, the fresh breeze from the Indian Ocean, tropical sunshine, blue skies and balmy temperatures offer a Riviera-like microclimate. This comfortable four-bed room villa is situated in a large one-and-a-half acre garden strewn with coconut trees, flowering frangipani and filled with bird song. Steps at the edge of the garden lead down to a secluded beach. Amapola is an idyllic place where life is unhurried with time to read, time to dream and do nothing. Stand by the balcony’s edge upstairs and gaze into the horizon where the sun meets the sea – this is truly paradise. Amapola’s friendly household staff will ensure that you have a relaxing and memorable holiday. Three dogs – Labradors and Rhodesian Ridgebacks - are friendly and gentle and very much a part of this household. The house comfortably accommodates six adults and extra beds can be provided for children. However, the villa is not recommended for families with children under 10 years of age.

Accommodation The house design incorporates verandahs, courtyards, high roofs and open spaces that bring the outside in. The large elegantly furnished bedrooms open out to garden or panoramic sea views. All the rooms have ensuite bathrooms, antique four-poster beds fitted with mosquito nets and comfortable antique recliners that serve as an additional bed if required. The rooms are cooled by natural breezes and ceiling fans.
Facilities The living room opens out in all directions to the gardens and has large day beds and antique bookcases filled with plenty of reading material for you to enjoy. This home is adorned with treasured pieces of art, murals and sculptures that the homeowners have collected from Sri Lanka as well as travels to distant lands. Dining in this villa takes on a new meaning – you choose the place: indoors in the breakfast room, by the poolside or on a terrace upstairs. Both Western dishes and Sri Lankan rice and curry are served at the villa. Discuss your menus with the cook and he will ensure that tasty meals are prepared to your liking using local fruit, vegetables and seafood. The garden is vast, bordered with a coconut estate at one end and a secluded beach below. Set on a side of the garden is a dramatic 18-meter infinity pool, which gives a feel of merging with the sea and the horizon beyond.
Excursions Amapola serves as an excellent base for exploring the south: the fine beaches, and tranquil rural countryside. Weligama, Unawatuna and Mirissa beaches offer a perfect environment for swimming and snorkeling along the coral reefs. Amapola is also located just 20 minutes away from the historic Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting pot of cultural influences. Several hours can be spent wandering along its narrow streets and ramparts. Several boutique hotels within the Gall Fort offer fine dining. For the more adventurous, a jeep safari to Yala National Park makes for a fun day out. |
