Malgedera, which translates as `house of flowers’, is true to its name. This homely villa stands in colourful gardens scattered with anthuriums, haliconias, and bougainvilleas as well as many fruit trees. The house possesses modern conveniences and is well staffed. The villa has a large verandah and a swimming pool. Malgedera comfortably sleeps up to nine people and children are welcome. A cook trained in Sri Lankan and Western cuisine will shop as well as prepare meals. Malgedera has a pet Alsatian, Lola.
Accommodation There are four ensuite bedrooms – two doubles opening out to the front verandah and one double and a triple room at the back of the house which has been newly built. Some of the rooms are somewhat small but all have a/c and are comfortably furnished with queen-size four-poster antique beds. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers, washbasin, and w/c.
Facilities Malgedera’s extensive front verandah houses dining and living areas that overlook the gardens and the swimming pool. The inside lounge has a work area equipped with a computer, internet facilities, TV with satellite channels, and music system. The kitchen at the back of the house is well equipped. The staff includes an English-speaking manager, cook, housekeeper, gardener and pool attendant, and nightwatchman. The staff is discreet and will ensure your privacy. Only the night watchman is resident on the premises.
Excursions Explore the surrounding village with several temples and wayside boutiques. Just outside the gates is the villages cinnamon boiler where the processing of cinnamon into oil takes place. The beautiful beaches of Thalpe, Unawatuna are nearby and surfing is possible at Midigama. Go on a boat ride on Koggala Lake with many islands inhabited by numerous species of birds. Galle’s historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is 15 minutes away. Hours can be spent in the Fort exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, the sturdy ramparts, and growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, cafes and restaurants. |
